Vitamin D3

Vitamin D, often called the “sunshine vitamin”, is really a hormone that has been categorized as a vitamin. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, present in some fatty food, including fatty fish and cod liver oil. Fortified foods such as milk and cereal are the major dietary sources of vitamin D. Normally when UV light from the sun penetrates through skin, underlying fat and cholesterol produces vitamin D through denaturation, in response to sun exposure.  It has two main forms, D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol), that differ chemically only in their side-chain structures. Vitamin D2 is present mainly in plant foods whereas Vitamin D3 is present in animals.  Studies have shown that vitamin D3 raises blood levels of vitamin D for a longer period of time compared to vitamin D2 due to its bioavailability.

There are many factors which could contribute to vitamin D deficiency, including low fat diet, race, occupation, clothing, and liver, kidney, intestinal disorders. Therefore, supplementing the diet with extra vitamin D is essential for optimal health.
